One of the most notorious hitchhikers is the zebra mussel. Originally from Russia, these thumbnail-sized mussels were first seen in the Great Lakes of North America in 1988. They cling to the sides of boats and clog the water intakes of power stations and factories, causing millions of dollars of damage each year.
