But Geldof was not satisfied with that amazing achievement. He was just getting started. He spent the first half of 1985 organizing Live Aid, a massive multi-country rock concert held on July 13, 1985 in London, Philadelphia, Sydney and Moscow. It was the largest TV broadcast of all time. An estimated 1.5 billion people in 100 countries watched the live broadcast. Geldof and the organizers hoped to raise two million dollars. When the money was finally counted, it came to over $245 million. The Queen of England made Geldof an honorary knight. It is doubtful that any person has ever done more to help the poor in such a short time.

Now it's 2005 and Geldof is about to outdo himself. His latest plan, called Live 8, is happening right now. It's a set of live concerts on July 2, timed to precede the G8 economic summit at which leaders of the world's richest countries usually discuss ways to make their own countries even richer. Geldof hopes to shame them into giving some of that money back to Third-World countries by canceling their debts and doubling the aid given by the G8 countries. Concerts are being held in London, Philadelphia, Berlin, Rome, Paris and other cities. Don't miss it.
