He called up his friend, Midge Ure of the band Ultravox, and together they wrote a song called Do They Know It's Christmas. The song touched the hearts of millions and became the biggest-selling single in UK history (until 1997). It raised millions of dollars in aid money to help the Ethiopian people who were starving.
