After the War, designer Louis Reard ran into difficulty promoting(促銷;宣傳) his new swimsuit(泳衣). He couldn't find any fashion models daring(無畏的;膽大的) enough to wear his suit in public. In July of 1946, he hired(雇用) an exotic dancer, Micheline Bernardini, to model(展示) his suit at a popular swimming pool in Pairs. Bernardini, who was accustomed(習慣的;適應了的) to wearing next-to-nothing in public, received excellent reviews(評價;評論). She also received more than 50,000 piece of fan-mail. The bikini had caught on.
Within a few years bikinis were the suit-of-choice for women bathers(泳客) all across the Mediterranean(地中海), and Reard's business was booming(景氣好;繁榮). He was a very successful marketer(行銷人員), coming up with memorable(難忘的) descriptions of the bikini's small size: "It reveals(顯露出;展現) everything about the girl except her mother's maiden name!" And again: A swimsuit isn't a bikini "unless it can be pulled through a wedding ring."
