Birth of the bikini(比基尼的誕生)
In 1946, bathers(泳客) at a beach in France looked up and saw an airplane writing letters in the sky: "Atome(亞頓)-the world's smallest bathing suit." It was an ad(廣告) for one French designer's newest release(發表;推出): a small two-piece women's bathing suit. A few weeks later, bathers at the same beach looked up to see a rival(對手;競爭者) ad. It read, "Bikini-smaller than the smallest bathing suit in the world."
At the time, Europeans were enjoying their first war-free summer in many years, while European designers were coming up with new styles to match this feeling of liberation(解放;自由). The man behind(居後) this second ad was mechanical engineer Louis Reard, inventor(發明者) of the modern bikini. Reard's desing, which he described as "four triangles(三角形) of nothing," which he described as "four triangles of nothing," was named after the Bikini Atoll(環礁;環狀珊瑚島) in the South Pacific(南太平洋).(The Bikini Atoll had just been in the news because of the US's atomic weapons tests there.)
The world had seen two-piece bathing suits before, but never anything as small as a bikini. Wall drawings from Ancient Roma show women at bathhouses(澡堂;公共浴室) wearing suits similar to bikinis. In the 1930s, European women started wearing two-piece suits, although these were quite conservative(保守的;傳統的) and left only a thin(薄的;透明的) portion(部份) of the woman's waist(腰) exposed(暴露）-the bellybutton(肚臍) was always carefully covered up！ The two-piece didn't appear in the US until war-rationing（配給） measures, one of which was a 10% reduction(減少) in fabric(布料;織物) used to make bathing suits.
