Puppy vs. giant snake (小狗對抗巨蛇)
A few recent visitors to the Floride Everglades National Park have spotted incredible wrestling matches between alligators and giant snakes. Others have stopped their cars to remove "tree trunks" lying across the road, only to be startled when the logs start moving.

These enormous snakes are Burmese pythons. They can reach 6 meters in length and weight 90 kg. They belong in Burma, not in Florida, but irresponsible pet owners often release them when they get too big in the house. The only thing park workers can do about them is catch the snakes and destroy them.

To help with this, Evergiades wildlife technician Lori Oberhofer is training a beagle puppy named Pete to track the pythons. "He just loves doing it. It's a big game for him," said Oberhofer.

First, she puts a python into a cloth bag and drags it to form a trail. She leaves the python and Pete's favorite toy at the end of the trail. "I want Pete to think that this scent means fun," she explains. She then puts a red collar and leash on Pete, which they only use for "work time." In the future, when Pete is tracking snakes for real, the leash should prevent him from becoming the next meal for one of the pythons.
