The first superjumbo jet (第一代超級巨無霸噴射機)
April 27,2005 marked the maiden(初次的,無經驗的) flight of the Airbus A-380,the larget commercial airliner(客機) of all time. The test flight lasted four hours and went off without a hitch(故障). More than 30,000 people watched the take-off and landing at Toulouse, France, with many sitting alongside the runway(跑道).
"A new page of aeronautical(航空的) history has been written,"said French President, Jacques Chirac. Singapore Airlines will take delivery of the first sales model in 2006 for use on the Sydndy-Singapore-London route(路線). Airbus has orders for 153 more planes, and says it needs to sell another 100to break even on the model.
The A-380 flight was probably the most anticipated(預期) event in commercial aviation(航空) since the first flight of the supersonic(超音波) Concorde in 1969. It was big news not only because of the plane's sixe, but also because of the huge investment risk Airbus is taking. Stretching 73m from nose(鼻) to tail(尾), with a wingspan(翼展) of nearly 80m , the new "superjumbo(超級巨無霸)" is too big for most airports to handle. They will need to strengthen and widen runways, and build new boarding gates(登機門). Some major airports have already said they will not pay for such upgrades(升級), while others see them as necessary to stay competitive(競爭).
